Making Meaning

A few months ago, I had a few experiences in the span of several weeks, that seemed odd.  I didn’t think much of any of them… on their own.  In fact, I thought I’d handled each situation pretty well, and seen them for what I thought they were (reactions of others 😊).  Then one more situation occurred, and I was triggered!  It was the proverbial the “straw that broke the camel’s back”.

I thought I’d let each prior incident go, yet my mind had gone into a different modality.  Unbeknownst to me at a conscious level, each incident was carefully stored in a particular file in the memory bank.  When the final trigger came, all the “evidence” from the previous experiences came flooding in to make meaning aligned with a belief I had which was to say: “see, I told you so”.    

How weird.

Before long I noticed what was going on, took stock, got some facts, and clarified the situation. Turns out it was a tempest in a teapot – and I avoided a longer tea party with the Mad Hatter!

Know what I’m talk’n about? 

Our unconscious fears and beliefs feel powerful, unless and until we shine light on them.  Then they are seen to be the limp shadows of nothing.

The next time you are triggered by an incident, hit your inner pause button and see if you can’t just make another meaning of the situation.
